Sleep Apnea Dental Appliances
Sleep apnea is a serious medical disorder that affects approximately 10% of American men and 6% of American women over the age of 40. During sleep, sufferers may completely stop breathing hundreds of times per night due to airway obstruction, reducing airflow to the lungs and oxygen levels in the body.
Dental appliances can be an effective treatment for sleep apnea, particularly for patients who are not significantly overweight. These devices work by gently repositioning the lower jaw forward, opening the airway, and allowing oxygen to flow freely. Users often experience reduced snoring, improved daytime rest, and more comfortable sleep. These appliances offer a non-invasive alternative to Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy.

Sleep apnea dental appliances fall into two categories: fixed and adjustable. Some commonly used devices include:
TAP® 3 (Thornton Adjustable Positioner)
The TAP® 3 is a compact, comfortable, two-part custom appliance that fits over the teeth like a sports mouthguard. It gently projects the lower jaw forward to prevent the tongue and soft tissues from obstructing the airway. The adjustable jaw position ensures comfort and accommodates the three main types of malocclusion while allowing the lips to fully close.
OASYS Appliance
The OASYS appliance repositions the jaw to move the base of the tongue forward, opening the oropharynx and strengthening the upper airway. An extension of the upper shield enlarges the nasal opening, reducing airflow resistance. This adjustable device is designed for comfort and patient-friendliness.
Klearway™ Appliance
The Klearway™ appliance helps alleviate obstructive sleep apnea and eliminate snoring. The jaw can be advanced in 0.25mm increments for maximum comfort. Made from Variflex™ heat-softening acrylic, the appliance becomes pliable in warm water for easy insertion, then hardens once positioned correctly.
Herbst Telescopic Appliance
The Herbst appliance combines acrylic with adjustable metal wiring, held in place by clasps and friction grips. It allows vertical and lateral jaw movement without dislodging the device. Typically used in mild to moderate cases, it is also effective for reducing loud snoring.
