Onlay Restorations

An onlay restoration is a custom-made filling made of composite material, gold, or tooth-colored porcelain. Sometimes called a partial crown, it is created by a professional dental laboratory and permanently cemented onto the tooth by your dentist.

Onlays are used to conservatively repair teeth with large defective fillings or damage from decay or trauma. They are an ideal alternative to crowns because less tooth structure is removed. Onlays are similar to inlays, but include one or more chewing cusps that require restoration.

As with most dental restorations, onlays are not permanent and may eventually need replacement. They are highly durable and can last many years, providing a long-lasting, beautiful smile.

  • Large fillings

What Getting an Onlay Involves

An onlay procedure usually requires two appointments. During the first visit, accurate impressions (molds) are taken to create your custom onlay and a temporary restoration.

While the tooth is numb, the dentist removes any decay or old filling material. The tooth is cleaned and prepared to properly fit the onlay. A temporary filling protects the tooth while the onlay is fabricated by a dental laboratory.

At the second appointment, the onlay is carefully cemented into place. Minor adjustments may be made to ensure a proper fit and comfortable bite.

You will receive care instructions at the conclusion of treatment. Good oral hygiene, a proper diet, and regular dental visits will help maintain the longevity of your new onlay.
