Mini Dental Implants (MDIs)
Mini Dental Implants (MDIs) have revolutionized implant dentistry by offering a less invasive, quicker solution for patients. Unlike traditional full-size implants that often require multiple visits and surgical procedures, MDIs can be placed in a single, non-invasive treatment session. They are most commonly used to stabilize dentures and overdentures, eliminating the frustration of loose or ill-fitting prostheses.

MDIs are small, screw-shaped implants designed to function as artificial tooth roots. They are typically made from titanium and may be coated or infused with calcium phosphate to promote rapid healing and long-lasting results. The top of the implant features a ball-shaped head that securely fits into a retaining mechanism on the denture. This design allows dentures to rest comfortably on the gums while withstanding natural biting and chewing forces.
Advantages of MDIs
MDIs provide numerous benefits, especially for patients who want a minimally invasive procedure or have experienced bone loss. Some key advantages include:
- Stabilizes lower dentures effectively.
- Minimally invasive—no cutting, sutures, or extensive surgery required.
- Can be used in patients with limited jawbone density.
- Quick treatment—procedure can be completed in about an hour.
- Permanent results with high success rate.
- Improved chewing, speech, and denture fit.
- Better oral hygiene—no adhesives, no food trapped beneath dentures.
- Reduced cost compared to full-sized implants.
How Are Mini Dental Implants Placed?
The MDI placement procedure is straightforward and usually takes about one hour. A typical lower jaw case involves four MDIs placed approximately 5mm apart. The procedure generally follows these steps:
- A mild anesthetic is administered to ensure comfort.
- Small holes are drilled into the jawbone to accommodate each MDI.
- Each implant is screwed into place and tightened with a winged wrench.
- A ratchet wrench is used to fully stabilize the implants.
- The denture is measured and modified to fit precisely over the implants.
- Rubber O-rings on the implants snap into the designated spots on the denture, securing it snugly over the gums.
In almost all cases, no stitches are needed, and patients experience minimal discomfort. After placement, light eating can resume immediately, and dentures can be removed and cleaned at will. MDIs not only improve denture stability but also enhance the natural appearance and functionality of the smile.
