Orthodontic Treatment for Children – Manchester Dentistry
Orthodontic treatment is primarily used to prevent and correct bite irregularities. Factors contributing to these irregularities include genetics, early loss of primary teeth, damaging oral habits (such as thumb sucking), and developmental issues. Crooked teeth can affect self-esteem and make oral hygiene difficult, whereas properly aligned teeth reduce the risk of tooth decay and childhood periodontal disease.
Request an AppointmentWhy Early Orthodontic Treatment Makes Sense
Some children display early signs of minor orthodontic irregularities. While some cases are monitored over time, severe irregularities benefit from early intervention, which can:
- Enhance self-confidence and aesthetic appearance
- Support proper jaw growth
- Promote properly aligned adult teeth
- Reduce risk of bruxism (teeth grinding)
- Reduce risk of cavities, gum disease, and tooth decay
- Prevent impacted adult teeth
- Minimize the need for lengthy orthodontic treatment later
- Reduce risk of speech problems
- Protect teeth, gums, and jawbone from injury
When Can My Child Begin Orthodontic Treatment?
Pediatric dentists recognize three age-related stages for orthodontic care:
Stage 1: Early Treatment (2-6 years old)
Early treatment aims to guide dental arch growth and provide space for permanent teeth. Candidates include children who:
- Have difficulty biting properly
- Lose baby teeth early
- Experience jaw clicking or grinding
- Brux (grind their teeth)
- Primarily breathe through the mouth
Treatment may involve dental appliances to promote jaw growth, hold space for adult teeth, or prevent teeth from shifting. Harmful habits like thumb sucking and excessive pacifier use may also be addressed.
Stage 2: Middle Dentition (6-12 years old)
The focus during middle dentition is on realigning jaws, correcting crossbites, and gently straightening misaligned permanent teeth. Both fixed and removable dental appliances may be used. Children with fixed appliances should maintain excellent oral hygiene to prevent staining, decay, and other damage.
Stage 3: Adolescent Dentition (13+ years old)
During adolescence, orthodontic treatment focuses on straightening permanent teeth and enhancing smile aesthetics. Braces (fixed or removable) are commonly used, and retainers may be required after treatment to maintain alignment.
