Dental Implants

Dental implants are an excellent solution for replacing missing teeth and provide a stable, fixed alternative to removable partial or complete dentures. They offer strong support for dental appliances and help restore both function and aesthetics.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are artificial roots and teeth, typically made from titanium, that are surgically placed into the upper or lower jawbone by a dentist or periodontist—a specialist in gums and supporting bone. Implants look natural and can enhance or restore a patient’s smile.

Implants are durable and can last many years, though occasional re-tightening or replacement may be necessary due to normal wear.

Reasons for Dental Implants

  • Replace one or more missing teeth without affecting adjacent teeth.
  • Resolve joint pain or bite problems caused by shifting teeth.
  • Restore a patient’s confident smile.
  • Improve chewing, speech, and digestion.
  • Restore or enhance facial tissue structure.
  • Support a bridge or denture, making it more secure and comfortable.

What Does Getting Dental Implants Involve?

The process typically spans several months and multiple visits:

  1. Assessment: X-rays and impressions of the jaw and teeth are taken to evaluate bone, gum tissue, and spacing for the implant.
  2. Placement: With the area numb, the implant is surgically inserted into the bone. It is then allowed to heal and integrate with the bone for up to six months. Some implants may require a second surgery to place the post, while others have the post attached during the initial placement.
  3. Fitting Artificial Teeth: After healing, custom artificial teeth are made and attached to the implant post. Multiple fittings may be needed over one to two months for proper fit and comfort.

After completion, patients receive instructions for oral care. Maintaining good hygiene, healthy eating habits, and regular dental visits will help maximize the longevity of the implant.
