After Dental Implant Surgery
Proper care following dental implant surgery is essential to ensure successful healing and integration of the implant with the jawbone. During the first month, the implant is still fusing with the bone and surrounding tissues, so special care is required. Avoid disturbing the surgical site in the first 24 hours by refraining from rinsing, spitting, or touching the area.

- Antibiotics: Take all prescribed antibiotics to prevent infection. Begin using the prescribed oral rinse 24 hours after surgery, twice daily, along with a warm saltwater rinse 4–5 times daily, ideally after every meal or snack.
- Bleeding: Some blood in saliva is normal during the first 24 hours. Bite gently on gauze pads to control bleeding, maintaining steady pressure and replacing gauze as needed.
- Pain Management: As the anesthetic wears off, start taking pain medication. Over-the-counter options like Tylenol®, Aleve®, or ibuprofen can be used as needed.
- Diet: Begin with soft foods, gradually returning to a normal diet as comfortable. Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
- Oral Hygiene: Keep the surgical site clean to promote healing. Brush your teeth as usual, avoiding sutures and the implant itself. Use antibiotic and saltwater rinses to disinfect the area.
- Swelling: Some swelling is expected. Keep your head elevated, reduce activity, and apply ice packs for the first 48 hours to minimize swelling.
- Prosthesis or Night Guard: Avoid wearing partial dentures, flippers, full dentures, retainers, or night guards for at least 10 days unless otherwise instructed by your dentist.
- Smoking: Smoking increases the risk of infection and implant failure. Avoid smoking for at least 2 weeks after surgery.
Recovery Process
Recovery varies for each patient, but maintaining excellent oral hygiene is crucial for the implant to properly fuse with the jawbone. Minor swelling, bruising, and bleeding are normal, and oral discomfort should gradually decrease. Pain medication can be used as needed during recovery.
Healing time depends on whether an immediate crown was placed or if the implant is allowed to integrate fully before restoration. Follow-up appointments will be scheduled according to your individual treatment plan. With proper care, your dental implant can last a lifetime.
