Sippy Cups and Toddler Tooth Decay
Many pediatric dentists believe that prolonged, frequent sippy cup use can contribute to toddler tooth decay. While sippy cups are useful for easing the transition from bottles to adult drinking glasses, their effectiveness at preventing spills has led to extended use into late toddlerhood. This has contributed to an increase in pediatric cavities, sometimes called “baby bottle cavities,” in children ages two to five.
Request an AppointmentWhen Should My Child Use a Sippy Cup?
Sippy cups should be introduced when the child is physically able to grasp them, and discontinued as soon as the child can use an adult-sized cup, usually around one year of age. Since teeth are at risk for decay as soon as they emerge, establishing a good oral care routine early is crucial.
Pediatric dentists recommend the following guidelines for sippy cup use:
- Do not fill sippy cups with sugary liquids; water is preferable.
- Do not allow continuous sipping; remove the cup once the child has finished drinking.
- Do not take sippy cups to bed unless they contain water.
- Avoid using sippy cups to comfort the child with sugary liquids.
- Rinse the sippy cup frequently with water to reduce germs.
- If sugary liquids are consumed, offer them at mealtime when saliva production is highest.
How Do Sippy Cups Cause Tooth Decay?
Sippy cups themselves do not cause decay, but sugary liquids in the cup can. Fluids like breast milk, formula, juice, soda, or sweetened water coat the teeth continuously due to the slow flow from the cup. Oral bacteria feed on these sugars and produce acids that attack enamel, leading to cavities. Some cavities form between teeth and may be hard to detect, making biannual pediatric dentist visits essential for monitoring.
Choosing the Right Sippy Cup
The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends the following:
- Avoid “no-spill” valves that release very small amounts of liquid, which can prolong sugar contact with teeth.
- Choose a cup with a spout (snap-on or screw-on lid) to encourage proper sipping habits.
- Two handles are preferable, helping the child get accustomed to holding larger adult-sized cups with both hands.
