Inlay Restorations

An inlay restoration is a custom-made filling made of composite material, gold, or tooth-colored porcelain. It is created by a professional dental laboratory and permanently cemented into the tooth by your dentist.

Inlays are used to conservatively repair teeth with large defective fillings or damage from decay or trauma. They are an ideal alternative to conventional silver or composite fillings and are more conservative than crowns, as less tooth structure is removed.

As with most dental restorations, inlays are not permanent and may eventually require replacement. They are highly durable and can last many years, providing a long-lasting, beautiful smile.

What Getting an Inlay Involves

An inlay procedure usually requires two appointments. During the first visit, accurate impressions (molds) are taken to create your custom inlay and a temporary restoration.

While the tooth is numb, the dentist removes any decay or old filling material. The tooth is then cleaned and prepared to properly fit the inlay. A temporary filling is applied to protect the tooth while the inlay is fabricated by a dental laboratory.

At the second appointment, the inlay is carefully cemented into place. Minor adjustments may be made to ensure a proper fit and comfortable bite.

You will receive care instructions at the conclusion of treatment. Good oral hygiene, a proper diet, and regular dental visits will help maintain the longevity of your new inlay.
