Periodontal Maintenance

It only takes 24 hours for plaque that is not removed from your teeth to harden into calculus (tartar). Daily home cleaning helps control plaque and tartar, but hard-to-reach areas require special attention.

After completing periodontal treatment, your dentist and dental hygienist will recommend regular maintenance cleanings, usually four times a year. During these appointments, pocket depths are carefully checked to ensure they remain healthy. Plaque and calculus that are difficult to remove at home will be cleaned from above and below the gum line.

What to Expect During Periodontal Maintenance

  • Examination of diagnostic x-rays (radiographs): Detect decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss, and help determine tooth and root positions.
  • Examination of existing restorations: Check current fillings, crowns, and other restorations.
  • Examination of tooth decay: Inspect all tooth surfaces for decay.
  • Oral cancer screening: Check the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, cheek tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer.
  • Oral hygiene recommendations: Review and recommend oral hygiene aids, such as electric toothbrushes, special periodontal brushes, fluoride, and rinses.
  • Teeth polishing: Remove stains and plaque not removed during daily brushing and scaling.

Good oral hygiene practices and regular periodontal cleanings are essential for maintaining dental health and keeping periodontal disease under control.
